The 400 year old tradition: Cool Japan!
Traditional HandiCrafts of Aizu,
“Aizu Pottery Market!”
The annual event, “Aizu Hongo Pottery Market” will be held in the main street of Hongo, “Setomachi street” in Aizu Misato.
The history of Aizu Hongo Pottery bagan in Azuchi-momoyama era, which was during the reign of Hideyoshi Toyotomi.16 potters still make pottery which all have different features.
The pottery market is the main event of Hongo, which has been annualy held over 200 years. There will be about 100 pottery stalls, lacquer ware, vegetables and food. About 30,000 people from Fukushima and some other prefectures come to enjoy this event every year. It starts from early morning before sunrise and it gets very crowded with people with torches who go around to find their own favourite products. The lights of the stalls in the dark street are beautiful and you will find the kindness of people in Aizu as you hear the laughter and see their smiles.
This will be a good opportunity to be able to get the products at cheaper prices as all the shops sell them for discount prices. There will be various kinds of products, such as hand-painted traditional dishes, simply designed dishes with interesting textures, and useful dishes which can be used either Japanese or Western food.
You will also find new products and great bargains there.
